[on 'InRealLife' which deals with the effect of the Internet on young people] As much as it has been this huge advance in knowledge, it's also been kind if isolating as well. I once gave a talk at a girls' school and, once I'd finished, 29 out of the 30 girls wanted to be film directors. I think that's where we need to get girls interested in making films. We need to give them the idea that they can, that it's one of the things on their horizon.

It's been the Antonia [And] Jane, To Wong Foo strand, the more comedic of my work. I think it is a great gift to make people laugh, and it shouldn't be underestimated. I mean, I don't mean my great gift [laugh, eyes, fireworks], I mean a great gift in the community.

And maybe if the world was some other world, then it wouldn't be enough, but, right now, I think it's important. I don't want to be grand, but I think it's a little bit important.

She came to prominence with the much lauded adaptation of Jeanette Winterson's autobiographical novel 'Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit'. Since then she's directed feature films, television dramas and documentaries. In 2008, she founded the charity called Filmclub with Lindsay Mackie.
