I think our generation focused less on our own music. We thought, 'One day I may get a gig in Roy Haynes' band, or Freddie Hubbard's, so I better learn their music'. When we played in New York we would go to the gig and let them know how badly we wanted to play with them. There was an honor in getting to play with the older cats, you know?

One thing I love about all music fans, say, between the ages of 16 and 30 - not to start profiling - is that young listeners aren't jaded. They're really wide open to hearing anything. They might not know what they're going to hear. They're just sitting there with their antennas up.
