Kate Gilligan was born in Brooklyn, New York and understood from an early age that acting would be her life. She took lessons from childhood culminating in a BFA from Ithaca College. She has since worked onstage and in television.Gilligan has the polished beauty, presence and diction of a television anchor and so has been cast in that role several times, including a guest appearance on Louie (2010) in which she demonstrated considerable comic skill as a deranged reporter in a dream sequence. Gilligan lives in Los Angeles with her husband, fellow actor Steve Campbell.
