[on engaging Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave for Lillian Hellman's 'Julia'] Why not? It was perfect symmetry. The two most famous left-wing women of the '70s playing two left-wing women of the '30s. I liked it. Of course, the fact that Jane and Vanessa were both terrific actresses didn't hurt either. Not to mention they both agreed to work cheap.

Richard Roth is a movie producer and writer based in New York City. His film credits include The Way We Were, Julia, Manhunter, Blue Velvet, In Country, and Havana. He is currently working on To The White Sea, based on a novel by James Dickey; and has recently written a screenplay in collaboration with Bret Easton Ellis.
