Of Maori, Irish and Scottish descent and born in Napier, New Zealand to a young mother, Rob was temporarily given the name Nathan Mikaere Kipa but was adopted at 10 days of age to Warren and Elizabeth Williams. Not knowing he was named, Rob's new parents renamed him Robert Williams.
