Tom Tangen was born in Jackson, Minnesota. His parents were Bernie Tangen and Jan Clark Tangen Nestingen. He attended Glenwood City High School and The University of Wisconsin-River Falls. His debut film was Purple Rain (1984). He was the founder of the St. Croix Valley Actors Theatre and also The Los Angeles, Actors Coalition.
