Mace pretends to be a private investigator hired by Jann to find Gus because his and Mira's marriage was never officially annulled. Mace was really Jann's partner in the elaborate scam to rob Mira's family winery. When Jann backed out of the plan, Mace killed him and tried to rob the winery himself. While in the process of robbing the winery, Gus and Mira walk in and Mace threatens them. Mace's cigarette though set off the fire alarm and he slipped and knocked himself unconscious allowing him to get caught
