'Hot Rod' got his nickname operating a chop-shop in the Arizona desert. He took advantage of unsuspecting travelers like Clark W. Griswald one too many times and narrowly escaped the long arm of the law in 1983 when he fled to Memphis. There he expanded into drug running under the cover of a legitimate towing business.
