Biography
"I suppose my favourite medium is theatre because you get that connection with the audience and you get an adrenaline rush and a buzz from performing on stage. Doing events like this is quite similar because you get that same connection with the fans and you get to see how passionate they are about the show." (Sci-fi Weekender - April 2017)

Doing Torchwood, as the storyline developed I knew Ianto would end up having a proper snog with Captain Jack at some point. When it finally happened John Barrowman knew I was nervous. I wasn't nervous so much about kissing a bloke, it was much more about kissing the star of the show. On the first take, he told the director not to cut - he wanted to see how long it would take for me to crumble. So it happened, and he didn't let go, and the director didn't yell "cut"... after the longest 30 seconds of my career we both fell about laughing and the ice was broken. Intimate scenes with John (and there were more than a few) were a doddle after that.

[About Ianto Jones, San Diego ComicCon2008] Yeah. He is a sort of battler, a sort of Alfred to batman's cave I suppose...to the hub, to their base. He gets them everywhere on time. He is the one in the suit. He is very regulated. He's got a stopwatch to keep time. He's that precise. There's a bit of a romantic tryst between him and Captain Jack, who's the le...

There's a bit of a romantic tryst between him and Captain Jack, who's the leader of the organization. And... ehm (John Barrowman steps over & kisses him on the cheek). There's quite an obvious romantic relationship between Ianto and Captain Jack. He is sort of the logical one, the sensible one that keeps everybody in order, with occasionally a stabbing, dry wit.

[on his character: Juror 12, in Twelve Angry Men - Theatre - 15 May 2015] He's quite obnoxious but unaware of himself, he speaks before he thinks, which is probably the way a lot of ideas are brainstormed in advertising, but there's no place for it in a jury room. I think he grows up quite a lot within the play.

[on any specific things he travels with, any lucky charms] Not really. I've got my phone and my Kindle which have all my pictures on. I have all my 'good luck' cards that I get on the first night, I'm quite superstitious about that. A lot of actors will dump them at the first theatre but I keep them and take them on tour with me. No lucky charms, but my mum gave me a little 'good luck' teddy 20 years ago, which I keep in my digs, I don't take it to the theatre in case it gets lost.

[on being in touch with his former cast mates in Torchwood] Very much so, we send each other the occasional message, we see each other at conventions. I travel around doing a lot of science fiction conventions, which is amazing. I've seen so much of the world because of the show, I regard myself as very lucky. Being an actor, I discovered I could do all sorts of jobs, and not just the one. And astronaut was top of my list. And then I realized as I got a little older I could be an astronaut, a fireman, a policeman, a doctor. Um, a teaboy. An alien hunter, a superhero. It opened a door to a lot more possiblities.

[on his character Ianto in "Torchwood"] I'm not really like Ianto at all. I'm a lot more impulsive than he is and I'm more inclined to do crazy things! Ianto hides things away a lot more, which is what makes him such an interesting character to play.

I love horror and I always count on Twisted Showcase to send me a script that's impossible to turn down.

I'd like to do a Romulan or a Vulcan... I was a big Trekkie in my youth. Any of the Star Trek aliens sort of fascinate me, close to my heart I suppose.

I love Burn (Gorman); he's so fucking good; he's such a good actor that whenever Burn is doing a scene, I watch him so closely, because I'm such an admirer of his skill. The character's unapologetic and so is he, he's completely unapologetic about who he is. He's a very pure person.

[on his friendship with John Barrowman] Whenever I see John we pick up right back where we left off... we forged a good friendship in Torchwood and that always be there.

Ooh, that's difficult. They're different. Stage I like for the immediacy and the audience response, but working for the cameras needs subtlety and naturalism. For the theatre, you have to use a lot of stagecraft and technique to convince the audience but the camera picks everything up and you can't do that, you have to convince the person you're speaking to.

It's one of those things I was never going to say I'd never do, but it was after talking to John Barrowman about his role in Jack and the Beanstalk in Cardiff a few years ago that got me thinking. He said how much fun he'd so I thought I'd give it a go when they approached me.
