His mother, Esther Safran Foer, a child of Holocaust survivors, is the Director & CEO of the Sixth & I Historic Synagogue in Washington, DC. His father, Albert Foer, is a lawyer and President of the American Antitrust Institute. After graduating from Princeton, Foer attended briefly the Mount Sinai School of Medicine before dropping out to pursue his writing career. Joyce Carol Oates was his mentor.
