Originally an abstract from the celestial realms, Azrael became a demon after staying neutral and refusing to take part in the battle between Lucifer and God. Azrael suffered in hell for millions of years afterwards, until he came across a Catholic concept known as the plenary indulgence, wherein a person walks through the doors of the church and all their sins are forgiven. At this point he set a plan into action. He put a human avatar of God into a persistent vegetative state, manipulated two angels, banished from heaven with a decree to never return, to travel to a church in New Jersey where the indulgence would be granted. Upon having their sins forgiven, they could return to heaven, contradicting God's word and negating all existence. Azrael later explains that he would rather not exist than continuously suffer in hell Azrael nearly succeeds with this plan, however, he is foiled by his sister abstract, Serendipity, and Bethany, a descendant of Jesus's family. They introduce him to Silent Bob and the golf club of a local Cardinal, and Bob hits Azrael with the blessed club, killing him.
