Dell Brandstone, best known as Chase, is one of Richard's closest friends. While he does not play a main character in the series, he does have an important role. Chase is a boundary warden, one of a group of elite protectors that guard the boundary separating Westland from the Midlands, keeping the underworld creatures in the boundary from escaping and keeping people away from the boundary so that the creatures have nothing to feed on. He is described as a very large and muscular man with brown eyes and brown hair that is just beginning to go gray. He is nearly always seen with several weapons covering his body and is proficient with them all. He is married to a kind woman, Emma, and they have several children. Chase is essential in helping Richard and Kahlan in their quest to get to the Midlands.
