Possibly the smartest man in the world of this movie, he comes up with the way for the drilling team to destroy the asteroid or at least throw it off course. He uses Harry's drill designs, and gets them quite wrong. He is there through the course of the movie, offering guidance, explaining, and providing warnings during the final countdown to asteriod impact.
