Doctor Woody Strode is named for famous athlete Woody Strode who broke the color barrier in the NFL two years before Jackie Robinson, Woody's college teammate and roommate, did in MLB. Woody went on to become a character actor, appearing in several John Ford films, as well as other films, both drama and westerns, including Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West.
