Beth is the cousin of Tara Maclay. In the fifth season episode Family, Beth is introduced as a seemingly timid and kindhearted individual -- however, this is quickly revealed to be a facade. Beth's loyalty is to her uncle (Tara's father), and not to Tara -- in other words, to the idea of the institution of family rather than to family members themselves. It is implied (although not explicitly stated) that Beth too is under the false impression that the female members of the Maclay family succumb a demon nature at the age of 20. However, Beths loyalties do not alter upon receiving this news. At the end of the episode, she leaves Sunnydale along with Tara's father and brother.
