Dennis Hopper plays the role of Dave Hastings, son of Morgan Hastings (James Gregory), the conniving villain who swindled John Elder out of his ranch in a crooked card game and then murdered him to seal the deal, leaving John's wife Katie destitute. Hopper plays the role well as the almost sniveling, dominated son of an unprincipled swindler masquerading as a town father and booster.
