Samuel Barnett depicts the title character in the wildly bizarre Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (2016). His spin on the Douglas Adams private detective is updated, but Samuel brilliantly retains Dirk's oddities. Self-labeled as a holistic detective, Dirk believes in the fundamental interconnectedness of all things. He doesn't seek traditional clues but feels the universe will lead him to solve his cases. This causes Dirk to appear inept at being a detective due to his go with the flow attitude.Dirk picks up on intuitions but dispels his psychic abilities. His hunches leads him on strange paths that are horrifying but surmises his cases can only be solved by him. Dirk is a subject of a government agency called Project Blackwing who is out to gather all the occupants of their study. Born Svlad Cjelli, and Blackwing name, Project Icarus, Dirk is irritating, chatty, outlandish and bumbling but underneath is distinctively charming.
