Dr. Metz was a research scientist, as specialist in optics and optical physics. As part of a plan to extort money from world governments, Ernst Stavro Blofeld assumed the identity of reclusive billionaire industrialist Willard Whyte, and took control of Whyte's empire. He persuaded Metz to construct a powerful satellite-based laser using diamonds as the amplification crystal, and then used the resources of Whyte's corporation to have the device orbited by the government. Blofeld tricked Metz, telling him that the plan was to force disarmament (and presumably peace) on the world using the weapon. Metz realized too late that Blofeld's real plan was far more mercenary. Metz presumably died when the false drilling platform from which Blofeld controlled the satellite exploded following an attack orchestrated by James Bond.
