Stephen Maturin (Esteban Maturin y Domanova) is a physician and a naturalist in the Royal Navy during the Naploeonic Wars. The cornerstone of this movie (and indeed the series of books) is the close relationship between Dr Maturin and Captain Jack Aubrey (played by Russell Crowe). The two, although complete opposites in many ways, enjoy a close friendship. During the film, we especially see them bond over thier mutual love of music, Maturin plays the cello and Aubrey the violin. Their most memorable scenes together are below-decks, playing their duets against the backdrop of the rugged and perilous life at sea.
