Evelyn 'Grams' Ryan is the maternal grandmother of central character Jennifer Lindley. She was introduced in the pilot episode of the show, and is shown to have deep religious beliefs, often coming into conflict with Jen, an atheist. She and her husband have one daughter, Jen's mother Helen, although the two are not close and see little of each other.Ryan worked as a nurse for many years, but retired several years before Jen moves in with her.
