At the age of 10, Gareth was appointed as the guard to the pompous, spoiled King Richard. Gareth is the typical sword-toting, wisecracking henchman, but he has a sense of nobility and a big heart. Although Dickie is his best friend, Gareth hates the king's child-like behavior and finds himself drawn to Richard's frigid, power-hungry wife, Madalena, who encourages him to rule over Valencia as her king whilst Richard flees to his own kingdom.
