Beautiful and broken, Hana, a Canadian nurse, has lost everyone she loved in the war. She volunteers to stay with the burned, unidentified patient who has come under her care. Alone with him in a destroyed monastery, Hana is joined by Caravaggio, a thief, and Kip, a Sikh mine sweeper. She and Kip fall in love, but he must leave her after the bombs are dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
