Hopper was an American actress active from 1916 to 1942, but she is better known as one of America's best-known gossip columnists and as a fervent Republican strongly supporting the congressional House Un-American Activities Committee. Her frequent attacks against Charlie Chaplin in the 1940s for his politics and love life probably contributed to his being denied a permission to re-enter the United States after travelling to Europe in 1952.On May 8, 1913, she married actor and singer DeWolf Hopper.
