Joe was a soccer player for a men's team and his father expected him to be great. Then Joe blew his knee out and ended his soccer career. Depressed, but determined to have a life involving soccer, Joe started a woman's team. In the movie, he's Jess and Jules' coach. Jules has a crush on him but says she's over it, which later causes conflict between her and Jess.Joe is a key role, convincing Jess that just doing what her family wants wont make her happy - which he attributes to his own knee injury. He comforts her and acts as her support throughout the movie. However, he falls in love with Jess, which isn't allowed because he's her coach. The whole movie, he keeps trying to kiss her but is either foiled by others or the rules.In the end, Joe is no longer her coach so he tells her how he feels and they finally kiss just before Jules and Jess board a plane for America.
