Lerner is one of the members of the platoon. In one scene he is one of other members of the platoon who witness Chris' first pot smoking experience. He has a neutral, non-brutal personality who most likely agrees to Sergeant Elias's morals. His specialty was to translate and communicate with the civilians when the platoon was at the small Vietnamese farm. He was injured severely when they were ambushed, and was later brought back to the central headquarters by a helicopter to get healed.
