Malia Tate is a were-coyote who on a full moon killed her mother and sister in a car accident. This caused her to transform into a coyote and run off. She is turned back into a human when Scott and Stiles find and help her. However, she is not initially happy about her transformation back to human. She is forced to look her father in the eyes and try and tell him why her mother and sister are dead. This leads he to Eichen House where she runs into Stiles.She eventually becomes an ally of Scott, but having been a coyote for years, she doesn't understand how to act around people. She thinks only of herself and doesn't understand that you don't leave people behind and that the first instinct shouldn't be to kill. She becomes a friend of Kira and Lydia, and the girlfriend of Stiles.It is revealed that she is in fact adopted and is the biological daughter of Peter Hale and a woman known only as the desert wolf . This memory was stolen from Peter by his older sister Talia and he therefore doesn't know who her mother is either. She finds out that Peter is her father when she sees her name on the deadpool as Malia Hale. She feels betrayed by Scott and Stiles. She eventually forgives them realizing that they didn't tell her the truth in order to protect her.
