Private James Fredrick Ryan from Minnesota is mistaken for Private James Francis Ryan from Iowa, who the main cast spends the length of the movie searching for. After being incorrectly informed that his brothers are dead and he will be going home, the grief-stricken Minnesota Ryan eventually reveals that his brothers are in grade school and could not be the three soldiers killed in action.
