Monsignor Timothy Howard is intensely ambitious and sees running Briarcliff as his stepping stone to becoming cardinal, with his trusted ally Sister Jude at his side. To realize his aspirations he is willing to make a devil's bargain with an unscrupulous member of the staff, but his moral compromises have limits.
