Kurt Schmid, a self-proclaimed Army Brat, swore that he would never join the army. Soon after his high school graduation, however, he enlisted. He decided to be trained as a combat medic, because he believed that those skills could help him out more in civillian life. At the time of the Battle of Mogadishu, his training was the equivalent of a physician's assistant.
