Allan Quatermain
Character created by author H. Rider Haggard. Allan Quatermain is the leading character in King Solomon's Mines . As created by H. Rider Haggard, he is a middle-aged, rather grumpy adventurer who goes on dangerous jungle expeditions, but definitely not a dashing romantic hero. He was played as written by Cedric Hardwicke in the original 1937 British film version of King Solomon's Mines , while the romance was left to Anna Lee and John Loder. (The film also starred the legendary Paul Robeson as Umbopa, and yes, he got the chance to sing.) However, in the now more famous 1950 Technicolor version of the novel, the storyline was almost completely revised, Umbopa became practically a bit role, and Quatermain was refashioned into exactly the kind of dashing leading man typical of adventure films of the 1950's so that he could be romantically involved with Deborah Kerr, who played the leading female role. He has apparently stayed this way, as evidenced by the 1985 re-make of King Solomon's Mines , in which Richard Chamberlain played the role opposite Sharon Stone, yes, that Sharon Stone. He was also a dashing hero in the TV remake with Patrick Swayze. So far, the story itself has seldom been remade using Haggard's original plot, except for a much criticized 1982 TV animated version and an even more widely criticized British-German version entitled King Solomon's Treasure , in which John Colicos played Quatermain. And the character as written by Haggard, a crotchety, bearded adventurer, was seen on film yet again in 2002, this time played by Sean Connery in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen .Quatermain's name influenced the creation of Allan Quartermain (note the spelling difference), a character on the popular soap opera General Hospital . This was because Anna Lee, who was in the original 1937 version of King Solomon's Mines , played an important role on the soap.
