Athelstan is a young Anglo-Saxon Christian monk who is captured and taken from his monastery by Ragnar Lothbrok on his unsanctioned raid to Lindisfarne in Northumbria. He is kind and gentle and trustworthy.Background: Athelstan was born to a family who could not afford to care for him, so they gave him up to the monastery. Eventually Athelstan came to find reward in his Christian faith, which he believes in deeply. Although Ragnar treats him decently, Athelstan struggles to keep his faith in the Nordic pagan society. Ragnar trusts him to look after his children while he is away. He has sworn a vow of celibacy, which he takes seriously. He admired and cared for the priest in the monastery, Father Cuthbert. He was killed by Floki the viking builder.
