Gianna works for the Volturi in Tuscany, Italy as the receptionist so that the humans Heidi brings in for the meals won't run away screaming before they're killed - to add to the human front. Of course, Gianna knows exactly what the Volturi are and hopes that when the time comes she will become a part of their organization; as a vampire rather than be killed for her knowledge.
