James W. Gettys
James W. Gettys is the Governor of New York in Orson Welles' Citizen Kane.Charles Foster Kane, publisher of the New York Inquirer, is shown running for Governor against Gettys -- referred to by Kane as Boss Gettys -- sometime during Kane's first marriage to Emily Norton Kane. At this time, Kane is also conducting an affair with singer Susan Alexander. Gettys seizes upon that fact, once the polls indicate that Kane will defeat him, by forcing Alexander to send a note to Emily Kane describing the affair. The note, which arrives just after a key speech by Kane, invites Mrs. Kane to a meeting at Alexander's flat. Kane arrives with his wife. Gettys is waiting in the apartment to give Kane a choice to either quit the campaign or have his affair with Alexander smeared across New York's newspapers. Kane remains in the campaign, sees his affair hit the pages of New York's Daily Chronicle, and loses the election to Gettys. The revelation leads to Kane's divorce.Gettys is not seen again in the film.
