An officer in the Polish cavalry which fought the Nazis, Janusz belonged to the thousands of Polish soldiers who were imprisoned when the Soviet Red Army invaded Poland by the east. He was framed for being a spy against Russia, and after his wife is tortured into testifying against him, is committed to getting out of the Siberian gulag as soon as possible.
