John Dashwood is the son of Mr. Dashwood from his first marriage and therefore half-brother of the three Dashwood girls. He is married to Fanny Ferrars Dashwood. They make a very becoming couple. John is very egoistic, greedy and self-absorbed, as is his wife. With Fanny's help he talks himself out of the promise he made to his dying father; to help his stepmother and sisters. Nevertheless he regards it as his obligation to present them to suitable potential husbands, as long as his wife does not interfere.
