John is a human on The Axiom. Initially, he is just like the other humans on the ship: disconnected from the world around them, absorbed in technology, and totally complacent with the dull routine of the ship. After a run-in with WALL-E in which he is knocked out of his hover-chair, he gains a deeper awareness of and amazement about the world around him. He then meets Mary, who shares a similar awakening after meeting WALL-E, and the two begin to interact on a seemingly regular basis, and become friends. It is implied that there is a romantic connection between the two.
