Lane is Rory's best friend since elementary school. Her passion is music, and she develops an interest in playing the drums in season 2. For most of her childhood, she had to hide things such as her collection of rock CDs and her makeup under floorboards in her room because her mother is extremely strict. Her father is mentioned a couple of times, but never seen. When her mother discovers how much she has been hiding from her, she tells Lane she can't live at home anymore. Lane temporarily moves into Yale with Rory, but it doesn't last because she doesn't actually go to school there.She gets a job at Luke's Diner in season 4. She attended Stars Hollow High, and then a Seventh-Day Adventist School until her mother kicked her out of her house.She's in a band called Hep Alien. The original line-up was Zach on guitar/vocals, Dave on guitar, Brian on bass, and Lane on drums. Dave left for college, and was replaced by Gill, despite Gill being much older than the rest of the band.She and Dave begin dating in season 3, but are forced to hide their relationship for a while because of her strict mother. They stay together when Dave leaves for college, but this doesn't last long, and soon Lane develops an interest in Zach. She marries Zach in season 6, and in season 7 they have twins named Kwan and Steve.
