Mike Massimino is an actual NASA astronaut who is part of Expedition 31 to the International Space Station along with Dimitri Rezinov and Howard Wolowitz. When he Skypes with Howard before the mission, he gives Howard his mission nickname after hearing his mother screech to him about his cereal. And so Howard is Froot Loops. He also pranks Howard once they are in space.
