In the books, Sonya Karp was a Moroi teacher at St. Vlad's who was driven mad from her elemental specialty, Spirit, and became a Stirgoi. She is seen in flash backs, of Rose's in the first book or so until we meet her in the sixth book, when another Spirit user cures her, or turns her back to the race she originally was.
