Initially the family's driver, Tom forms a relationship with Sybil based on their political activism and general rebellious natures. Tom aspires to a career in politics, and is a socialist Irish nationalist and republican. He makes no secret of his distaste for the aristocracy and the ruling class, but tells Sybil that he respects Lord Grantham and his family for their fairness toward their employees. He only disapproves of Lord Grantham as a representative of the oppressive class.Tom is also Catholic. His religion, Irish background and extreme political positions make for some tense exchanges with the family. Tom struggles to maintain his staunch working-class persona while adhering to the lifestyle at Downton, and changes in his standing will challenge is ability to stay true to his working-class roots. Tom longs to return to Ireland.
