Ygor
Ygor
The character of Ygor, as created by Bela Lugosi in Son of Frankenstein, the third in the series of Universal Frankenstein movies, was far more complex than the generic deformed mad scientist's assistant he is generally remembered as. Ygor was motivated by greed and evil himself, a former grave robber and murderer who had been sentenced to hang, but somehow survived the noose, developing his odd stance and leathery neck hide in the process. He dreamed of finding a way to kill those responsible for his conviction, and finally found it when the young son of Dr. Frankenstein arrived at the castle interested in reviving his father's work. The monster had an affinity for Ygor, and was willing to do his murderous task. Later, in Ghost of Frankenstein, a new mad scientist dreams of placing Ygor's brain in the monster's body - hardly a means of pacifying it!Marty Feldman later turned in a fine comedic performance in Young Frankenstein, but this version was alas more the cliched assistant than the deformed madman.
