Charles Widmore is a very wealthy man and the father of Penelope Widmore. Charles has an intense connection to the island and staged a fake plane crash wreckage for news and media reports after Oceanic Flight 815 crashed in order to detract attention from where the plane actually crashed. He is laser focused on finding the island and killing Ben Linus, at one point sending in a team of scientists and mercenaries to do the job. In addition to all of this, Charles does not approve of his daughter's relationship with Desmond Hume and does not want them to marry.
