Diane Jansen is the mother of Kate Austen. The pair have a tumultuous relationship, to say the least. After taking out an insurance policy on it, Kate burns down Diane's house with her abusive stepfather (Diane's husband) still inside as a way to escape his abuse and to help her mother out of a bad situation. But Diane turns Kate into the authorities, starting her daughter's run from the law.
