Dr. Alan Chaffee and his wife, Barbara are the parents of Mara, their daughter and leader of the alien children.Alan is devastated and heartbroken over his wife's death and his daughter's lack of compassion and love. He plants a bomb in a briefcase and brings it to the barn to the alien children, knowing that it's the only way to save the town. He is killed, along with Mara and the other alien children.
