Lang takes over as Lord Grantham's valet when Bates is away. Miss O'Brien forms a connection with Lang after being impressed with his valet skills and learning that he was taught everything he knows by his mother, who was a lady's maid like Miss O'Brien. This connection grows stronger when it is revealed that Lang is suffering from shell shock, as Miss O'Briens brother did, after his time at war.
