Joe Lee Mickens is the biological father of Sam Merlotte and was in prison when Sam was born, leading his mother, Melinda, to give Sam up for adoption. He is also father to Sam's half-brother Tommy. Joe Lee knows about his wife and son's shapeshifting abilities and sees them as a way to profit, disregarding any danger it might put Tommy in. He will never win a father of the year award.
