Lux has been in and out of foster and group homes since she was 3 years old. She was given up for adoption by her 16 year old mother at birth, who was told that Lux would have no trouble being adopted. Due to a heart birth defect she was in the hospital until she was 3. She was never adopted due to her past health issues and age. At 16 she decides to become an emancipated minor. She tracks down her birth parents to get the signatures she needs and goes to court with her parents in tow. The judge denies her request and awards joint custody of her to her birth parents, a man-child father, Baze, who didn't know she existed and a popular radio talk show host, Cate, who Lux has always listened to and felt a special connection to. Neither parent has a clue what to do, but together they try to make it work.
