Nathaniel Baze Bazile got Cate pregnant in highschool and Cate gave the baby, Lux, up for adoption. 16 years later Lux shows up on Baze's doorstep asking him to sign papers that will make her an emancipated minor. Baze agrees then takes Lux to meet Cate so she can sign too. Cate is shocked to learn that Lux was never adopted and agrees to help. The judge denies Lux's petition and awards joint custody of Lux to Cate and Baze.
