Mercedes is a McKinley High School student and member of New Directions. If Rachel is New Directions' biggest star, the self-proclaimed diva has its biggest voice. She is a gifted vocalist in the model of Whitney Houston, who also has a keen eye when it comes to fashion.Because of Mercedes' immense talent and supreme confidence in her voice, she is occasionally at odds with Rachel as the two battle for the spotlight. A larger girl, Mercedes does have some self-esteem issues when it comes to romance and finding a boyfriend. She is a fiery personality and is loyal to her friends.Mercedes was one of the first students to audition for New Directions when Will Shuester takes over the choir. Her soulful voice is a strong weapon that will often be used to help New Directions during important competitions.
